Commemorates Atomic Bombing of Japanese Cities by US
Grammy Award winning Native American flutist Mary Youngblood will participate in Sacramento's 22nd annual August Peace Event to be held Saturday, August 9th. Doors will open at 4pm for networking and browsing the tables of local groups, and the family-friendly program will be held from 4:30 to 6pm. The event will be held at the Sacramento State Alumni Center on the southern edge of the campus, with free adjacent parking. For directions, go to http://www.sacstatealumni.com/alumniCenter.stm#Directions.
We are excited to feature Sacramentan Mary Youngblood as part of the program this year. She is a two-time Grammy award winner and the first woman to record professionally on the Native American flute. In addition, we will hear from Reverend Bob Oshita of the Buddhist Church of Sacramento; Dr. Bill Durston, former head of the local chapter of the Physicians for Social Responsibility; and Pamela Vergun, author of A Dimly Burning Wick, a Hiroshima memoir. The winner of the Physicians for Social Responsibility essay contest for local high school students will read her winning essay.
The event will commemorate the 63rd anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima by the United States.
California State University, Sacramento, is a major sponsor of this year’s event, along with many other peace and justice organizations.
