about

August 6th and 9th 2008 mark the 63rd anniversaries of the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Expanding the traditional anniversary commemorative period will allow more opportunities for groups to plan and organize events focusing on all aspects of the nuclear problem. This website is serving as an information clearinghouse for groups organizing actions and campaigns throughout the month of August and beyond. Our goals are to:

  • Conduct outreach to nuclear abolition, anti-war and climate change groups and networks
  • Collect and consolidate information about events and actions
  • Assemble high quality information and action resources
  • Coordinate media nationally
  • “Brand” August “Nuclear-Free Future Month”

may 1, 2005 This effort was initiated by the Nuclear Disarmament/Redefining Security working group of United for Peace and Justice. The working group was formed in June 2003 at the first national conference of United for Peace and Justice, which adopted disarmament as one of its top priorities. We are dedicated to building visible public support in the United States for sweeping measures to eliminate nuclear weapons in the U.S. as well as worldwide. Towards this end, the working group focuses on Education, Advocacy and Outreach, Street Actions, and Coordinated Civil Society Presence at International Disarmament Forums. In 2005, the working group spearheaded a mass "no nukes, no wars" march and rally on May 1; in 2006 and 2007 the group helped to coordinate nationwide actions on the U.S. atomic bomings of Hiroshima & Nagasaki.
